Jamarques Hudson is an emerging portrait artist from Pendleton, South Carolina, whose work centers Black figuration through drawing. Raised by a single mother and surrounded by the influence of women in his family, his understanding of identity and care is deeply informed by that upbringing. These experiences continue to shape both his perspective and the way he approaches creating.

For Hudson, drawing functions as both a therapeutic outlet and a language that allows him to process feeling, memory, and inner thought beyond what can be spoken. Through a range of materials, he constructs figures that exist between the personal and the spiritual, using a surreal lens to reimagine the Black body as symbolic, sacred, and transcendent. His work resists fixed or stereotypical representations, instead creating space for new narratives. The figures he creates move beyond realism into metaphysical realms, where emotion and spirit take form.
